NATFAN Research Project

The purpose of the National Food and Nutrition questionnaire (NATFAN) project is to determine the effect of the new WIC package on consumption of food and beverage choices by participants from states, territories, and Indian Tribal Organizations. The project includes three elements:

  • Design and develop the Food and Nutrition questionnaire (NATFAN) to obtain information related to the WIC foods and participating mothers, infants, and children at WIC clinics throughout the nation
  • Recruit all 90 WIC programs (states, territories and Indian Tribal Organizations (ITOs)) to administer and complete the questionnaires; to roll out the questionnaires to the participants prior to and after the new food package roll out
  • Organize and analyze the data from the completed questionnaires and provide feedback to the participating programs

Current Status
The Institute for Obesity Research and Program Evaluation has received grant funding from USDA Economic Research Service for the fiscal years 2011-2013, to finalize the reporting and analysis for the National Food and Nutrition (NATFAN) surveys of WIC participants. In addition to preparing targeted reports for key food items affected by the food benefit modifications, one of the important objectives for this grant is to create a publically available multi-state data set of all the NATFAN participating WIC programs.
