Act Now to Save Biking and Walking

January 31, 2012

On Thursday, February 2, the House Transportation Committee will vote on the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act, a bill that eliminates crucial funds for biking and walking infrastructure. Please contact your U.S. Representative and ask him/her to support physical activity in your community. Some changes that would result from the bill's passage:

  • Elimination of the two largest programs that fund biking and walking infrastructure—Transportation Enhancements and Safe Routes to School
  • States no longer required to maintain safe bridge access to bikes
  • Rails to Trails no longer eligible for funding under the Surface Transportation program

Ensuring our communities have the necessary sidewalks, crosswalks, and bikeways is essential to promoting and encouraging physical activity. In our continued efforts to combat obesity, we must safeguard the resources that create opportunities for exercise and fitness.

Please help -- and ask friends, colleagues, and members to act too.
