Responsible for nutritional needs assessment, medical nutrition therapy and nutrition education for Maniilaq Heath Center inpatients and outpatients referred by health care providers. Primary responsibility is to work collaboratively with the Maniilaq Association clinical medical nutrition needs to ensure that all receive appropriate medical nutrition therapy and nutrition intervention. Develops nutritional activities. Assesses the nutritional needs of patient and makes nutrition recommendations to other professionals. Trains health professionals in nutritional assessment and medical nutrition therapy upon request. Serves as a professional resource for services related to nutritional assessment, medical nutrition therapy, menu development, diabetes education as needed and patient nutrition education. Reports jointly to the Chief Nursing Officer and Inpatient Manager.




  1. Ensures that nutrition assessments are completed for all inpatients as well as outpatients referred by health care providers.

  2. Develops, implements, reevaluates nutrition care plans, and educates patients and family on nutrition issues with short and long-term goals documented in the electronic medical record.

  3. Participates in multi-disciplinary patient care meetings and medical rounds.

  4. Provides culturally sensitive training and advice to professional staff at Maniilaq Health Care and village community clinics on nutritional assessment, medical nutrition therapy, nutrition education related to acute or chronic disease processes, and conditions.

  5. Prepares and submits required data including a Board Report demonstrating continuous performance improvement strategies based on needs of our community and region.

  6. Teaches classes specific to diabetes, prenatal nutrition, breastfeeding, infant nutrition, child nutrition as well as nutrition and aging as requested.

  7. Communicates with Food Service Managers regarding food service issues and provides technical advice and in-services as needed.

  8. In absence of contracted food service, Clinical Dietitian acts in an advisory role in preparation and contents of therapeutic diets.

  9. Develops and maintains policies and procedure based on evidence based best practices, competencies and licensure.

  10. Travels to the villages to provide diabetes education, medical nutrition therapy and nutrition education.

  11. Available for emergency and non-routine dietary consultation after regular work hours.

  12. May provide nutrition education for other Maniilaq Association programs or community organizations upon request.

  13. May perform WIC duties in absence of WIC Program Manager and Diabetes Program Dietitian.

  14. May perform additional duties assigned by CNO and Vice President of Health Services.

Job Qualifications:



Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition/Dietetics, or related field.  Must have a Registered Dietitian license in good standing.  State of Alaska Dietitian License required within six (6) months of hire.  Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC) with the National Board of Nutrition Support Certification required within two (2) years of hire. Understands the developmental needs of all patients throughout the continuum of life and disease states and is able to adjust care to meet patient’s needs.

Ability to use the computer to assist with workload and Cerner. Ability to perform with minimal supervision. Good communication and patient care skills. Ability to work in a cross-cultural setting in rural Native Alaskan communities.
