Mother’s Day is a powerful reminder of the sacrifice, love, and everyday heroism of moms. At the National WIC Association (NWA), we believe that supporting moms and championing their mental health is not something we reserve for just one day. It’s a daily commitment that includes all forms of motherhood: biological and adoptive moms, grandmothers, aunts, godmothers, foster moms, and the dedicated WIC staff who uplift, serve, and care for moms.
As we recognize both Mother’s Day (May 11) and Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week (May 5–11), we reflect on what it truly means to uplift mothers — emotionally, physically, and socially. Children may represent our future, but mothers are the foundation. And when we invest in moms, we build stronger families and communities.
For four decades, NWA has worked to ensure that every mother has equitable access to the resources, care, and community support they need to thrive during pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond. These outcomes go beyond policy; they’re tangible proof that NWA delivers meaningful support to moms where it matters most.
As we reflect on our 40-year journey, here are some of the lasting impacts we’re proud to have made in support of WIC moms and staff over the last few years:
Secured full funding for WIC in fiscal year (FY) 2024 and continue to advocate for a “fully funded” WIC in FY2025 and beyond,
Launched scholarship opportunities for BIPOC WIC staff to build a more diverse and representative maternal health workforce,
Elevated participant voices through the third cohort of the Participant Advisory Council to ensure WIC moms help shape programs and services,
Led the Secret Ingredient Campaign to promote confident, community-driven infant feeding practices and build trust during challenging times,
Supported protective workplace policies like the PUMP Act and Pregnant Workers Fairness Act to safeguard maternal health on the job, and more!
Together, these achievements represent meaningful progress, shaped by WIC families' experiences, voices, and needs. Here’s what that impact sounds like, directly from the moms and staff at the heart of WIC.
To all the mothers, caregivers, mother figures, and WIC staff, thank you. Your strength, love, and dedication are the heart of every home and community.
At NWA, we know supporting moms means seeing the whole person, not just providing services, but walking alongside them with care, compassion, and belief in their strength.
This Mother’s Day and Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week, we celebrate all that moms are and all they give. We recommit to ensuring that WIC continues to be a place where mothers feel seen, supported, and valued. Here’s to 40 years of honoring mothers and to many more!
