Description
This position is will be located in Lincoln County, Newport, Oregon.
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited position performing breastfeeding peer counseling for WIC participants. Under the supervision of the Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Coordinator, a person employed in this position will provide basic breastfeeding information, support, and counseling to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding participants by telephone, texting, and during office visits.
Essential Functions
- Receives a caseload of WIC participants and makes routine periodic contacts with participants.
- Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to WIC participants, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding.
- Helps participants prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns within the scope of a Peer Counselor.
- Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding participants by telephone, texting, and during office visits at scheduled intervals determined by the local WIC program.
- Facilitates prenatal classes to prepare participants for breastfeeding. Facilitates postpartum groups for breastfeeding WIC participants.
- Respects each participant by keeping her information strictly confidential.
- Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC participants.
- Refers participant, according to clinic-established protocols.
- Attends staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate.
- May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding's peer counseling through projects and duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED with a demonstrated proficiency in reading and writing.
- Breastfed at least one baby six months or more (does not need to be currently breastfeeding).
- Meets the WIC demographic (mother of children under the age of five).
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and ability to pass a criminal history check.
- Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other parents enjoy a positive experience
- Able to make telephone calls and respond to texts outside of business hours on County issued Cell phone.
- Fluency in English & Spanish and able to communicate in a professional manner in written and spoken interactions with colleagues and participants.
- Basic technology skills an comfort with standard office computer use, telephone texting, and tele-conferencing (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams).
- Excellent Organizational Skills.
Supplemental Information
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bi-lingual in Spanish
- Has experience offering peer support.
- Has breastfed at least six months.
