WASHINGTON, DC—Yesterday, Senators Roger Marshall (R-KS) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) introduced the 21st Century WIC Act, bipartisan legislation that would modernize the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). In the House, the companion MODERN WIC Act (H.R. 1464) is led by Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR).
By making virtual certification permanent, this legislation would help reduce barriers to accessing WIC and better meet the needs of busy families while protecting WIC's strong program integrity and track record of improved health outcomes.
The following is a statement from Georgia Machell, President and CEO of the National WIC Association (NWA):
“The 21st Century WIC Act will make WIC, a proven successful public health program, easier to access for families. Transportation and leaving caregiving or work responsibilities to attend frequent WIC visits are major barriers for families trying to access WIC services. This bill helps ensure that working parents, rural families, families with limited access to transportation, and families facing other barriers can access healthy foods, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support so their kids can get the healthiest possible start.
“We are grateful for the leadership of Senators Marshall and Gillibrand and Representatives Fitzpatrick and Bonamici.
Without Congressional action, WIC participants will no longer be able to certify virtually after September 30, 2026. It is imperative that Congress pass the 21st Century WIC Act without delay.”
