Health and Nutrition Education Section Chief

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by advancing the health and well-being of California’s diverse people and communities. As an employee of the Local Policy and Health Programs Branch, the incumbent leads a team that provides support, training, and implements local and statewide policies which protect and serve the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program participants and local agencies.

The incumbent works under the general direction of the Chief, Local Policy and Health Programs Branch, Staff Services Manager (SSM) III. The Health Program Manager (HPM) II plans, organizes, and directs the work of a multidisciplinary team of professional, technical, and support staff of the Health and Nutrition Education Section. The HPM II ensures that the nutrition education and breastfeeding components of the WIC Program comply with applicable federal regulations and standards and that they support state and local efforts to promote healthy eating and active living for WIC participants and staff. In partnership with the Branch leadership, the HPM II oversees the design and development of program standards applicable to all local services WIC agencies for the purpose of providing quality nutrition services to WIC participants. The Section includes the Breastfeeding Support Unit and seven direct report professional staff. The Breastfeeding Support Unit consists of one SSM I and four professional staff. The manager actively participates as a member of the WIC Division Management Team.
