With Father’s Day just this past Sunday, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the role dads play in strengthening America’s families and helping them thrive. When dads are involved families are stronger. Research shows that active, supportive fathers contribute to better child development and more stable families.
As a father of two young girls, I understand how important it is to set up a child for success. And as Administrator of Food and Nutrition Service, under the leadership of President Trump and USDA Secretary Rollins, I am committed to ensuring every federal nutrition program – including WIC – is a pathway to healthy, hopeful futures.
WIC is so much more than healthy food – it’s a safety-net for low-income families who are at nutritional risk, navigating the challenges of pregnancy and early childhood. Offering nutrition education, health screenings, breastfeeding support, and referrals, WIC has served as a trusted resource for millions of at-risk families for over 50 years.
WIC is a crucial tool in Making America Healthy Again, helping parents give their children the best start in life. The nutritious foods and services WIC provides don’t just create strong families alone; strong families are built when the whole family comes together to support one another.
While eligible young children and their moms are the ones who receive WIC benefits, dads have a pivotal role to play in the program and the family. Here are a few ways dads can help build stronger families with a little help from WIC.
Give mom a break. Help your partner rest and recharge by providing her precious moments alone to take care of her own needs.
Support breastfeeding goals. You play an important role in making breastfeeding work for the family. Offer mom encouragement and patience while she feeds the baby. A healthy snack and a glass full of water go a long way, too!
Take time to bond with baby. Skin-to-skin contact has proven health benefits for both you and your baby. As baby grows, continue to carve out special time for you to spend with your child.
Hit the park or playground. Take older children out for some exercise and fresh air so mom can focus on baby’s needs.
Get cooking. With help from WIC’s nutrition education resources, you can prepare easy meals for your family and model healthy eating habits for your kids.
Be present. Join mom at your baby’s WIC and other appointments to provide support, ask questions, and advocate for your family’s needs.
Spread the word! Encourage other dads to get involved and learn more about WIC in their community.
WIC is most effective when families participate fully together. When both mom and dad are engaged, kids grow up feeling supported and secure. Fathers are an important part of the WIC journey, and their involvement helps build the foundation for children’s lifelong health and prosperity.
Let’s work together to build stronger families and stronger communities, one healthy choice at a time.
