Overview

WIC Participant Retention Strategies: Pre-Conference Workshop

Saturday, April 6th – 8:30 am – 5:30pm

WIC caseload decline has been a concerning phenomenon for a number of years. For even longer, retaining WIC participants for more of their eligible period has been a goal. WIC is innovative and strategies to encourage participants to remain with WIC longer or return to WIC have been implemented at the clinic, local and state agency level. This one-day workshop will focus on sharing lessons from the field and helping attendees work through the barriers and facilitators to implementing different WIC retention strategies in their specific WIC setting. Over the course of the day, participants will develop their own participant retention work plan. This will be a dynamic day of learning, sharing and strategizing.

The workshop will cover three primary areas:

  1. Context: How is participant retention currently being addressed?
  2. Lessons learned: What is working, what is not working, and why?
  3. Implications: How can attendees combine context with lessons learned to work through strategies that may be implementable in their specific WIC setting?

Specifically, we will explore the following questions through a series of panels and round-table discussions:

  • What strategies are being used in the clinic setting – both in the certification process and nutrition education process?
  • What strategies are being used in the retail setting?
  • What can we learn from positive outliers – agencies who are seeing an upswing or plateau in caseload?
  • What is the efficacy of different strategies?
  • How can we use data to predict participant drop-off and target retention strategies?
  • What are the contextual barriers to implementing retention strategies?
  • What contextual factors facilitate the implementation of retention strategies?
  • What types of strategies can be implemented without any additional funding?
  • What types of strategies require additional funding?

Note: registration for this event is separate to registration for NWA’s 2019 Education & Training Conference. You must register for these events separately.
