WIC Advocacy Manager

National WIC Association (DC, Maryland, Virginia area (within 2 hours of the NWA office) )

The National WIC Association (NWA), the nonprofit education arm and advocacy voice of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), has an immediate opening for a WIC Advocacy Manager.
The Association is a high-impact non-profit, member organization that represents more than 2,000 service provider agencies that offer quality nutrition education, breastfeeding support, health care and other social service referrals to at-risk women, infants, and young children in over 10,000 WIC clinics nationwide.  


The WIC Advocacy Manager will be part of NWA’s Public Policy Team and will be responsible for managing strategies to engage State and local stakeholders to advance NWA’s mission, public policy priorities, and objectives. The Manager works as a resource, convener, and advocate to inform, educate, and mobilize State and local providers, partners, participants, and grassroots networks to strengthen WIC services through federal legislative and regulatory change, state-based advocacy, and programmatic partnerships.

The successful candidate will be experienced in mobilizing advocates, enjoy communicating with a wide range of stakeholders and be able to work well independently and as part of a dynamic team.

Specific tasks include:

  1. Managing strategies to empower State and local WIC staff, State and local partners, and WIC participants to advocate on behalf of pro-WIC policies and practices.
  2. Serving as a public policy resource for NWA’s membership, particularly State WIC Directors, and monitoring and addressing State legislative and regulatory developments that may impact WIC’s public health and nutrition mission.
  3. Monitoring and tracking regulatory issues that impact WIC providers and participants. 
  4. Collaborating with the Public Policy Team and Member Services Team in strategizing, planning, and executing NWA’s National Policy Conference – and other policy educational opportunities and events, both virtually and in-person, as appropriate.
  5. Liaising with NWA member committees, board sections, and workgroups, as appropriate, to solicit member input on new and emerging public policy priorities in developing NWA policies, position papers and educational materials, and member-oriented events.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree and five years of field experience in public policy related to health, public health, or nutrition. A Master’s degree with major study in nutrition, public health, public policy, or closely allied field may substitute for two years of work experience.        
  • Experience managing grassroots advocacy initiatives.
  • Experience facilitating groups of diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to build partnerships with diverse stakeholders. 
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong sense of initiative.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Commitment to integrating equity, diversity, and inclusion into work.
  • Spanish language skills are a plus.

Salary Range:
$78,000 - $95,000


NWA full-time staff must be based in the DC metro area, which includes Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. We currently have a hybrid work environment with the expectation of one work day per week in the physical office at 1099 14th Street, NW Washington, DC. Staff have the option to work remotely for the remainder of the work week.
