Washington, D.C. – The National WIC Association (NWA) proudly announces the publication of the 2024 State of WIC Report, marking the 50th anniversary of WIC - half a century of steadfast commitment to improving maternal and child health across the United States. This year's report underscores the significant achievements of WIC, which now supports over 6.7 million mothers and children monthly through more than 12,000 local agencies nationwide. As the nation's first Food as Medicine program, WIC has been instrumental in advancing nutritional outcomes, enhancing breastfeeding rates, and delivering substantial healthcare cost savings.
Through 56 pages, the report outlines the program’s storied history, ongoing advancements rooted in the latest nutrition science, the momentum required to keep pace with modernization, and solutions to ensuring the program’s success for generations to come.

“Fifty years ago, WIC emerged from a modest clinic in Pineville, Kentucky, founded on a promise to improve health in our communities—a promise that has since grown into one of the most transformative public health programs in the United States. Today, as WIC reaches more than 6.7 million participants monthly, the program is primed to continue building on its past successes providing families with the resources and tools to give our youngest children a strong start in life.
“This report offers a comprehensive reflection of the program’s half-century legacy of success, plus a roadmap for the future—emphasizing the need for modernized technology, increased participation, investment in workforce development, and sustainable funding to ensure WIC's continued efficacy and accessibility.
