Health Program Specialist I

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by advancing the health and well-being of California’s diverse people and communities.  As an employee of the Workforce Services Unit (WSU), the incumbent serves as part of a team that provides support, advice, and assistance to WIC Division managers and staff in the area of Human Resources (HR). These services, in turn, allow the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) employees to complete their duties in an efficient and informed manner.

The incumbent works under the direction of the Chief, WSU, Staff Services Manager I (SSM I). The Health Program Specialist I (HPS I) is responsible for supporting the WIC Division by staying abreast of the most current Human Resources policies. The HPS I:

  • Supports and represents the SSM I by attending assigned internal and external workgroups and committees that are related to the WIC Division and WIC staff.
  • Interacts with WIC management, Center for Family Health managers or staff, and CDPH Human Resource Division managers or staff.  
  • Performs the most responsible, varied, and complex technical and analytical assignments related to workforce services.
  • Is responsible for database and spreadsheet development, training WSU staff on its usage, and preparing complex reports.  
  • Serves as the lead on restructure packages, drills that are received and audits that may be conducted from control agencies.
  • Functions as a skilled, technical consultant regularly performing duties that include confidential and sensitive departmental and program issues, coordinating WIC Division projects, and working closely with other CDPH offices.
