Job Description and Duties

 

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by advancing the health and well-being of California’s diverse people and communities. As an employee of the Local Services Branch, the incumbent serves as part of a team that provides monitoring, training, support for and collaboration with regional local agencies that serve the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program participants.  

The incumbent works under the direction of the Southern Section, Staff Services Manager II (SSM II). The Staff Services Manager I (SSM I) plans, organizes, directs, and supervises the work of Southern Unit, which includes multidisciplinary professional and technical staff who monitor for contract compliance of the public and private non-profit WIC local agencies providing services under contract and supervises the technical assistance, contract management, training, expenditure monitoring and consultation of contract managers to ensure that the WIC Program is conducted in accordance with federal regulations. The SSM I has supervisory and leadership responsibilities and actively participates as member of the WIC Division management team.  The SSM I is required to work in close coordination with the Section Chief to implement a strong compliance and monitoring program.  The SSM I exercises professionalism and tact when interacting with staff, WIC local agencies and the general public; maintains knowledge and skills related to specific section tasks, methodologies, materials, tools, and equipment; communicates effectively in dealing with the local agencies, public and/or other employees; and ensures that all staff complete assignments in a timely and efficient manner and adhere to departmental policies and procedures regarding attendance, leave, and conduct.  This position requires up to 25% statewide travel to perform job related duties.

Department Information

Over 200 state staff work at California Department of Public Health’s WIC Division located at the Natomas campus in Sacramento (free parking!). WIC is family-friendly and supportive of a teleworking environment that values employees and their families.
