For 40 years, the National WIC Association (NWA) has championed research, advocacy, innovation, and education to support WIC and the families it serves daily. As the nonprofit voice of WIC, we help turn data into action, transforming public health research into policies, tools, and services that make WIC stronger.
Research plays a critical role in shaping how WIC evolves to meet the needs of communities. Through research, we know that WIC participation improves birth outcomes, increases breastfeeding rates, improves diet and diet-related outcomes, and supports healthier infant feeding practices. These findings, along with other studies, have informed key updates to the WIC evidence-based food packages, nutrition education, and services, including breastfeeding support and preventive care.
In this blog, we are spotlighting the research hubs, tools, and resources that NWA offers to support WIC agencies, advocates, and partners, helping to turn research into real-world impact.
To help WIC staff strengthen WIC services, NWA offers the following tools and resources:
A go-to digital library for resources to support the work of WIC staff, researchers, and advocates by making it easier to find WIC-related resources and information. The Hub welcomes a diverse range of materials, including policy manuals, advocacy tools, toolkits, blog posts, peer-reviewed research, reports, and other relevant resources. Do you have a resource you’d like to share with WIC staff and advocates? You can submit them here!
Home to NWA’s most up-to-date policy resources, policy updates, and advocacy campaigns. Action Central includes one-pagers, fact sheets, and campaign materials you can use to inform and advocate for WIC’s role under changing federal and state policies.
WAN regularly convenes frontline WIC providers, industry representatives, community health partners, and grassroots advocates to build awareness, skills, and capacity to educate policymakers. WIC staff can utilize WAN to stay informed on policy developments, strengthen their advocacy skills, and learn how to effectively communicate the value of WIC to decision-makers. Join WAN today!
Recruitment & Retention (R+R) Campaign
The R&R Campaign raises awareness about WIC and supports enrollment through outreach support. With the R&R Campaign, WIC staff have access to our WIC branding and assets, monthly social media content, materials to promote WIC (posters, brochures, flyers, etc), all of which are accessible on the WIC Share Portal. WIC staff also have access to technical assistance, educational opportunities, translation services, content customizations, and more.
The newly redesigned SignUpWIC.com is also a resource for WIC staff. This website is a trusted place for families to learn more about WIC, check their eligibility, and find their local clinic. Families can connect with their WIC agency or start the enrollment process online!
Research-to-Practice Newsletter (CIP-WIC)
CIP-WIC’s Research-to-Practice quarterly newsletter highlights research from USDA, NWA, and academic institutions. WIC staff are encouraged to subscribe to the CIP-WIC Newsletter to receive the most up-to-date insights on WIC caseload trends, key findings from recent studies, and practical tools to support and strengthen services for the families they serve.
